| The Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Cellular & Gene Therapy http://www.fda.gov/cber/gene.htm The Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) regulates human gene therapy products - products that introduce genetic material into the body to replace faulty or missing genetic material, thus treating or curing a disease or abnormal medical condition. CBER uses both the Public Health Service Act and the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act as enabling statutes for oversight. FDA has not yet approved any human gene therapy product for sale. National Institutes of Health Guidelines on Human Stem Cell ResearchSUMMARY: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is hereby publishing final "National Institutes of Health Guidelines for Human Stem Cell Research" (Guidelines). On March 9, 2009, President Barack H. Obama issued Executive Order 13505: Removing Barriers to Responsible Scientific Research Involving Human Stem Cells. The Executive Order states that the Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Director of NIH, may support and conduct responsible, scientifically worthy human stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research, to the extent permitted by law. |
